The British Medical Association (BMA) has described the Government's proposed 2.5% pay increase for doctors in 2026 as "indefensible".
The Department for Health and Social Care suggested that a 2.5% pay uplift is possible without compromising key health commitments.

However, with current RPI inflation at 4.5%, the BMA argues that this proposal represents a real-terms pay cut for doctors. For newly qualified doctors, this would translate to a hourly pay rise of just 47p, from £18.62 to £19.09.
