Early voting for New York's next mayor has started, with outsider Democratic Party candidate Zohran Mamdani as the favorite to win.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old self-described socialist, has surged to the front of the campaign, leading with 47 percent support in the latest citywide poll.
He has been the target of 'Islamophobic' attacks, but his campaign has been boosted by young New Yorkers.

- Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is at 16 percent.
Early voting will continue until November 2, with Election Day on November 4.
The winner will take office in the New Year.
