Scammers Targeting Senior Citizens

Medicare's open enrollment period, which runs through December 7th, has begun. Unfortunately, this time also sees a surge in scammers attempting to exploit senior citizens.

According to Charlotte Foust of the Joplin Area Agency on Aging, text scams are the most common type of Medicare fraud, particularly during open enrollment. This is because older adults are increasingly using texting to communicate.

“That is the most common because everyone is now with the technology. A lot of our older adults who were resistant to the technology are now all about texting.”

Additionally, some agents may show up at doors without being contacted first, which is illegal.
