Europe Reviewing Ways to Better Protect Patients
The European Commission will review proposals to strengthen its alert system, which notifies authorities of disciplinary actions against doctors.
This decision comes after an investigation by OCCRP revealed that physicians banned in one country can still find work in another.
- Some doctors were banned for sexual assaults.
- Others were banned for botched treatments.
- Some even faked cancer diagnoses for profit.
The European Commission will look for ways to strengthen its alert system in response to an OCCRP investigation that identified more than 100 doctors who lost their medical license for serious wrongdoing in one jurisdiction but are licensed to practice in another.
In some cases, the doctors were banned for sexual abuse of patients, botched medical treatments, and even for intentionally misdiagnosing children as having cancer, for personal gain.
