Australian politician Barnaby Joyce has announced his resignation from the National Party and will not contest his New England seat in the next election.

"We have had an irreparable breakdown in relations" with party leadership, likening the rift to a "broken marriage."
Completing his current term as an independent, Joyce stated he is now "free to consider all options" post-election, hinting at a possible switch to One Nation.
