159th Joint Mekong River Patrol Launched by China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand

159th Joint Mekong River Patrol Begins

Law enforcement agencies from China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand launched their 159th joint patrol along the Mekong River on Tuesday. The mission aims to strengthen cooperation in combating cross-border crimes, safeguarding navigation security, and maintaining regional stability.

Purpose and Coordination

According to Chinese authorities, the joint patrol focuses on preventing drug trafficking, smuggling, and other illegal activities across borders. Regular joint operations have become a stabilizing mechanism for the Mekong region since their inception in 2011, following incidents threatening shipping safety.

China’s Ministry of Public Security emphasized that these coordinated efforts enhance mutual trust, improve intelligence-sharing systems, and ensure continuous monitoring of the river's key transport routes.

Regional Significance

The Mekong River, an essential trade artery connecting the four nations, supports both regional commerce and community livelihoods. Joint patrols have improved communication among participating countries and contributed to a safer transport environment along the waterway.

“Regular joint patrols have shown positive results in ensuring security and promoting economic development along the Mekong,” officials said during the latest operation briefing.

Author’s Summary
