African airlines record 7.3% passenger demand growth in October 2025 – IATA

IATA Reports Strong Growth for African Airlines in October 2025

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), African airlines recorded a 7.3% year-on-year increase in international passenger demand in October 2025. This growth highlights the continent’s continued recovery and resilience in global air travel following previous economic and operational challenges.

Passenger Traffic and Capacity Trends

Passenger traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs), rose by 7.3% compared to October 2024. Meanwhile, capacity, expressed as available seat kilometers (ASKs), grew by 9.0%. The load factor fell slightly to 73.1%, a result of capacity expanding faster than passenger demand.

Comparative Performance Across Regions

Africa maintained its upward trajectory in air travel, in line with the global recovery trend. IATA noted that all regions reported robust international travel performance, supported by recovering economies, improved connectivity, and increased tourism activities. However, African carriers still face higher operating costs and infrastructure limitations compared to their global peers.

Expert Commentary

Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, stated:

“Travel demand remains strong across most markets, demonstrating ongoing passenger confidence and resilience despite economic uncertainties. Airlines in Africa and other regions continue to adapt to dynamic market conditions.”

Outlook

IATA projects sustained growth for African airlines as governments and private investors prioritize aviation infrastructure and capacity expansion. Initiatives such as the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) also support regional integration and market efficiency, paving the way for future gains.

Author’s summary: African airlines experienced steady passenger growth in October 2025, supported by economic recovery, improved connectivity, and regional aviation initiatives.
