The ‘magicians of glass’ who have created Christmas decorations for decades

Crafting Festive Wonders

In the charming town of Czestochowa, southern Poland, GlitterLab turns holiday dreams into handcrafted baubles that captivate global clients, including luxury retailers like Harrods. This family-owned workshop, modest in look, has thrived for over 80 years, blending age-old glass artistry with fresh ideas. Owners proudly link their work to the area's heritage, where pilgrims once bought souvenirs from local makers near the Black Madonna icon.

A Legacy Born from Tradition

Founded after World War II by Barbara Mostowska's grandparents, GlitterLab started with simple glass items like cigarette holders before shifting to enchanting ornaments such as swans, mushrooms, and pine cones. As the third-generation leader, Mostowska oversees a team that honors Czestochowa's craft roots, claiming these skills flow through their veins like inherited DNA. The business expanded to molded designs like angels and Santa Claus upon entering the U.S. market, evolving while staying true to manual precision.

The Art of Design and Creation

Designers at GlitterLab begin with client sketches, shaping them into adjustable clay models to match visions perfectly before selecting glass, crystals, or metals for the final bauble. Veteran designer Mariola Koła, with 42 years on the job, finds pure satisfaction when a piece gets approved without changes, fulfilling exact tastes. These "jewelry for the home" pieces, like Harrods' pricier Yellow Floral Bauble at 125 pounds, aim to adorn spaces year-round, sparking lasting joy.

"In an age when you can buy anything anywhere for next to nothing, something made from scratch here in a European country, with honest work and thoughtfulness, is truly valued by customers," company owner Barbara Mostowska told The Associated Press.

"It means I've met their expectations, their taste. That's the greatest joy for me. I couldn't ask for a greater reward," says Mariola Koła.
