Louise Penny’s 20th Chief Inspector Gamache mystery, The Black Wolf, reached #2 on the hardcover fiction list. Our starred review called it “exemplary.” In March, Penny, a Canadian author, canceled her U.S. tour due to “the ongoing threat of an unprovoked trade war” and “other things the U.S. president is doing that make visiting the U.S. unpalatable.” However, she showed cross-border solidarity with two sold-out appearances at the Haskell Free Library & Opera House, located on the Vermont-Quebec border.
Mokumokuren, an Eisner-nominated manga creator, debuted at #6 on the trade paperback list with volume six of The Summer Hikaru Died, a coming-of-age horror series featuring queer themes. Yen Press began English translations in 2023, and Netflix premiered the anime adaptation in July.
Ree Drummond returns to the hardcover nonfiction list with The Pioneer Woman Cooks: The Essential Recipes, ranked #1. This is her ninth cookbook, maintaining broad popularity. Her previous title, The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Dinner’s Ready!, has sold almost 304,000 print copies since its release two years ago.
