This op-ed by Refaat Ibrahim argues that the Gaza war is not a defensive reaction but the latest stage of a systematic, century-old Zionist colonial policy aimed at demographic cleansing and forced displacement.

Israeli propaganda portrays the war on Gaza as a “defensive reaction.” However, the historical record reveals a different reality: systematic genocide, destruction of civilian life, and deliberate efforts to uproot whole populations. These actions continue Zionist colonial policies that began in the late 19th century.
Since their inception, these policies have pursued the creation of a racially pure Jewish state at the expense of Palestinians by employing forced displacement, economic blockades, and deliberate wars. Gaza is a central focus, not an exception, of this persistent colonial strategy.
From the start of the Zionist movement, Palestinians were viewed as a “demographic obstacle” to establishing a Jewish state. In 1895, Theodor Herzl, founder of political Zionism, wrote in his diary:
“The removal of the Arabs from Palestine must form part of the Zionist plan. The poor population can be transferred across the border by denying them employment. This must be done quietly and carefully.”
This quote exemplifies the long-standing intent behind the displacement policies that have shaped the conflict's trajectory over the last century.
Gaza's suffering is part of a deep-rooted, ongoing colonial policy focused on demographic engineering and territorial control, rather than a mere reaction to current events.
